SM2+, Facing a New Trial (新たなる試練の向こう), was released on 21 April 2017 in Japan as an enhanced expansion to the SM2 sets. This compact set added new GX Pokémon and Trainer cards that complemented the Islands Await You and Alolan Moonlight card pools.

Set overview

As an enhanced expansion pack (強化拡張パック), SM2+ was smaller than the main SM2 releases but packed with competitively relevant cards. The set continued the Alola Island Trials theme, featuring Trial Captains and Totem Pokémon from the Sun & Moon video games. Booster packs contained five cards each.

Key cards

Tapu Koko-GX headlined the set with its fast Electric-type attacks. Kommo-o-GX brought Dragon-type power with a GX attack that could deal massive damage. Vikavolt-GX and Toxapex-GX added strategic depth with their abilities. Notable Trainer cards included Altar of the Sunne and Altar of the Moone Stadium cards, plus Hala as a draw Supporter tied to GX attacks.

A Japanese SM2+ booster box contains 20 packs of 5 cards. The set includes main-numbered cards plus SR (Full Art) and HR (Hyper Rare) secret rare variants of each GX Pokémon.
