覚醒の勇者・超次元の暴獣 (Awakened Heroes / Ultradimensional Beasts): Japanese Pokémon TCG Set Guide (SM4)

SM4 comprised two twin sets — Awakened Heroes (覚醒の勇者, SM4S) and Ultradimensional Beasts (超次元の暴獣, SM4A) — released together on 15 September 2017 in Japan. These sets introduced the Ultra Beast Pokémon-GX and formed the basis of the English Crimson Invasion expansion.

Set overview

Each set contained approximately 50 main-numbered cards plus secret rares. Awakened Heroes focused on regular Pokémon-GX like Silvally-GX and Alolan Golem-GX, while Ultradimensional Beasts spotlighted the Ultra Beasts from the Sun & Moon storyline. The Ultra Beast cards carried a distinctive border design. Booster packs contained five cards each.

Key cards

The Ultra Beast GX cards were the defining feature: Buzzwole-GX dominated Fighting-type decks with its efficient attacks, Guzzlord-GX offered a high-risk, high-reward GX attack, Kartana-GX served as a versatile Metal-type tech, and Nihilego-GX brought Psychic-type disruption.

Silvally-GX became a flexible attacker with its type-changing Memory tools. Gyarados-GX and Alolan Exeggutor-GX provided additional variety. Counter Catcher and Counter Energy introduced the comeback mechanic for players falling behind on prizes.
